My name is Ruth. I have just joined the group as I was searching for cancer information. I have just been diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma in my upper right lung. It is already large 6 cm and I am having a pet scan and brain scan this week. Needless to say I am worried and nervous. I had no symptoms and it was found in an X-ray looking for arthritis in my neck. I am 69 years old, wife, Mother, Mother-in-Law, GrandMother, GreatGrandMother and many other things as well...a gardener, an amateur radio operator, I sew , I knit, I crochet, I freeze food from my garden and can vegetables and also can a wicked homemade salsa...well you get the idea...I'm just too busy to have cancer.

Thank you ksplat and brainman. As I mentioned in my "hello" post, I am recently diagnosed. I went for a routine checkup with an xray to my neck because I have some arthritis and the spot showed up on my lung. We are still in the beginning stages but I had a bronchoscopy with biopsy and it was determined to be an adenocarcinoma. It is large, like 6 cm...not good. This week I have the pet scan and a cscan of my brain looking to see if it has spread. Of course we are hoping that it hasn't but the fact that it is so large isn't a good sign.

I have learned a lot since finding your board and have been checking up on the many people posting here...Thanks for the welcome.

Ruth

Hi Ruth,

Welcome to this community and I'm very sorry you have a reason to be here. The testing phase of diagnosis is a very nervous time. Have they determined the cell differentiation from the bronchoscopy? Adeno is the most common type of NSCLC and therefore has the most treatment options available.

I know that 6 cm is on the larger side, but many have had tumors as large as 12+ cm that have responded well to treatment. I do hope this hasn't traveled anywhere, because if surgery remains on the table, that is the best possible scenario. Even if surgery isn't possible, one tumor can be radiated while doing chemo to address any other areas of mets. You are entering a new normal stage of your life, but you'll adjust and will still be able to accommodate many of the things you currently do.

Please keep us posted on your tests and we'll be here with a bunch of support. I'm sure you feel like you were clobbered over the head with this happening. You are lucky to have this caught "accidentally" because most lung cancers are not.

Wishing you the very best with the results of the next tests.

Hugs,
PBJ

Hi Ruth;
Welcome to the place nobody wants to be.
This is a great group and has been most helpful to me.
At this point you can feel a little like you were punched in the gut with the news, followed a dizzy feeling, well that was me anyway. Took me along time to sort things out. Wish I would have visited here sooner but as it is, I'm a slow learner. But you will have a lot of questions and at this stage some of the doctors can be pretty evasive with the answers. Why, because there is no hard definable answer, just bad news. Here you can share all your feelings and bring all your questions and get lots of help. Hope we can put a silver lining on a dark subject that we are facing.
God Bless
Dan

Thank you for you responses. I will know a little more following this week and at least have some idea about what the treatment will be after the pet scan and brain scan.

I had Breast Cancer a few years ago so cancer isn't new to me. This Lung Cancer is a new cancer though and has nothing to do with the Breast Cancer. As I know more, I will share it with you all. I actually find that I find comfort in people knowing because I don't want it to be a big secret and I have always shared everything with friends and family. I have already gotten so much from this board and I know there is more to come.

I had my Pet scan yesterday and have a day off before my brain scan on Thursday. Yesterday was a very draining day but we made it through and all I could think of was that I was already whining and I am still into the easy stuff. I hope that I can be as brave as the rest of you are.

Hello, and welcome Ruth,

You sound like an awesome lady - and yes, you do sound too busy to have cancer!

And you are already a survivor, it really does not seem fair that you have been singled out again for another battle.

Take care, I am thinking of you and praying for you, you'll find this a truly phenominal forum with some real angels on board.

Liz
