I have questions about the ghost tumor. My Brother in law just got dig. with melanoma. He has a definate tumor (I have not seen it but am told its about the size of palm & it protrudes out so you can see it even with a shirt on). I guess he has no visible lesion, and they have not found it anywhere else. I asked about a PET scan and haven't heard a definate that he has had one done. They are assuming he has. Most of my info is from his mom my MNL. he lives in a small town (half a state away) and is seeing an onc. in a bit larger hospital. The surgeon said he would not touch it. They have set up an appt to see someone @ KU Med. My MNL went to talk to them yesterday and now they are considering not going. Their Dr. @ home wants him to have radiation prior to surgery & now he is going with that option. I know they are worried about finances, and I don't know if this is part of their decision, if so I can't imagine putting that over your chances, or does he have news that he is not sharing and the radiation is just palative and has decided to see his fate. he has a 2 year old and 2 older girls plus his wife. I guess what I am asking is for those of you who have been there, what is your gut telling you with the info I have. My in laws are not a close family, and I part of me thinks they are trying to keep this a private as they can, they are use to not having family around and maybe are trying to keep it that way. Any insight, info and help is greatly appreciated. My mom died for breast ca when I was 15, so I at least have an idea of what this does to a family.

kansasconnection, I am very sorry about your brother in law's cancer and about your mother's death due to breast cancer.

The key to your brother in law's cancer is it stage. It sounds like it is very large. This probably means that it is at least stage III. It is unfortunate that it took him so long to get it checked.

You and your brother in law and family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to here this Kansas. It sounds like he needs a Melanoma specialist asap. I know on my cancer the Dr. did not want radiation or surgery for me (except original biopsy). He felt best to wait. My melanoma also had no visable sign of entry. But I have never had a tumor that protuded like you are describing. Again I would highly recommend a melanoma specialist. There are probably not alot of specialist in mid west I know east coast has 2-3 major clinics and up in Indiana and I believe Minniesota also have major clinics. If you look up interlukin 2 or melanoma on google you should be able to find some Docs. Of course the key is that they want help. Not an easy road my friend, I wish you and your family the best. If you would like more info on the Clinic and DR in Oregon I see. I can get you names if it is allowed on this web site.

Thank you for the info. Well a lot has changed since I last wrote. I finally got in contact with my sister in law. Turns out that my mother in law had it all wrong & doesn't seem to be catching on very quickly.

My brother in law was told that it was terminal, she didn't remember them saying a stage, but it is terminal. And they were going to see a surgeon @ KU Med in KC MO. His surgery was Fri & they removed a cantalope size tumor from his shoulder region. My MIL couldn't even get that straight. he is recovering fine and should be going home tomorrow. They will meet with their Oncologist in 2 weeks. Radiation has been talked about. My SIL says that everything they are doing is to prolong his life. They say if he is still alive in 5 years it will be a miracle. We all understand this but as stated before MIL is not getting this. I guess my sil just laid it all out again tonight in the waiting room, because my mil thought this was "all over".

I am sure that this happens a lot its probably denial, but at least the family knows what the prognosis is and we can be there for them & my MIL when she accepts it. Thanks again for all your info.
