Had robotic surgery on 7.29.08. Results on all scores exceeded my expectations, which were high given the feedback/info. I had going into surgery. My post-operation Gleason score was 3/4=7 and my pre-operation PSA was 5.5. Pain was a 1 (normal is more like 3 on 10 scale), discomfort was 1 (on 10 scale) and complcations were 0. Margins all negative.
Found out from my reseach and talking to the half dozen patients that I became friends with while recuperating on the club floor of a nearby hotel, that all had conducted much research (mostly on the web), along with a few hospital visits, and word of mouth, that Dr. Menon and Henry Ford is the place to go. He is the father of robotic prostatectomies in the US, doing his 1st in 2001 (did 90 of 1st 100 in US and well over 2000 robotic and 1200 open to date). They continue to make meaningful breakthroughs and improvements.
There are some other centers around the country that are excellent. Make sure you get their outcomes statistics (note: relatively few robotic centers keep these statistics and most that do, have outcomes for only 1-2 years). In terms of outcomes, look for metrics on cancer removal/re-occurance, surgery metrics (complications, blood loss, etc.), incontenence, and sexual recovery. The availability of a total integrated care protocol provided by the urology center is also key to reducing complications and adding peace of mind (particularly for our wives).
It was not a walk in the park, but as surgeries go, I would say it is the least painful, least discomforting, fastest recovery major surgery I will ever have (a 1 on a cale of 1-10 where 1 is the best).
