What means low risk prostate cancer?

Hi,

My brother was recently diagnosed with low risk prostate cancer. What means that? He must wait until the tumor will become high risk? Please let me know. He is 59 years old and do not like to talk about his condition.

I'm sorry for your brother condition.

It is important to distinguish between those patients with high risk prostate cancers and those with low risk. High-risk prostate cancers will benefit from radical treatments, like surgery, radiation or chemotherapy while low-risk patients do not need any treatment. The best option in this case is 'wait and see'. It is also a good choice to start diets, a lifestyle and moderate treatments that keep the tumor at low level.

As a prostate cancer survivor with a bother with prostate cancer I can relate to your concern.

That is a good link. I think Interval is exactly right but I would add that it is doubtful that I would accept one doctor's opinion that my cancer was low risk. I would get a second opinion from either a medical oncologist that specializes in urological cancers or at least another urologist at a different practice.

I always wonder how low risk the doctor would think it was if he had it. I think biopsies can be very subjective due to the technique itself, the lab's method, or the luck of the core samples. I had 3 biopsies (36 needles) before 2 even hit cancer.

I would also track this very closely and take an active role in my care, testing, and treatment. If your brother would be up to registering here, that would be a good start.

History: PSA's 6.7 neg. biopsy - PSA 16.6 neg. biopsy - PSA's 8.2 - 8.1 - 8.7 Biopsy. 4+4 Gleason 8. Lap RP Apr 2004, age 52 All neg margins, nodes, and structures. (T2a). Post RP PSA: every 6 mo. <.1 until Feb, 08 (46 mos) PSA .1 - I then got sensitive tests (all in 2008) showing:
Feb .06 - May .09 - Jun .10 - Aug .10

evie, is your brother's doctor actually recommending a "wait and see" approach? If so, I would ask for a second opinion.

Brainman, I really don't know about doctor's recommendation as my brother don't like to talk about this condition. I'll try to make him understand that this si a special situation and family's help and concern is the medicin.
