My dad had a CT Scan of abdomen and pelvic area, which included a lower portion of his lung. They found a 5mm nodular density in the lung, and recommended a 3 to 6 months follow up because of that. There is no further characterization of the nodule in the report. I am wondering if this is too long to wait, and may be he should ask for a biopsy.

hello igorvl;
Sorry to hear about your Dad, I'm wondering how he got to this point. With out more information it is very hard to judge. But I would basically I say yes, 3-6 months is too long. I would be back to my GP asking for answers, getting a full chest CT Scan with contrast and a biopsy. I went over 2 years with a spot on an x-ray, and I thought if it was important they would do it but often they don't.
Good luck, keep us posted.
God Bless
Dan

Hi igorvl. 5mm is pretty tiny, less than the diameter of a pencil. That's probably why the doctor is advocating a wait and see approach. It certainly wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion, though.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Hi,

I'm torn between both of the above posts. I think that a full lung scan should be done to make sure there are not more nodules. That being said, this is a small nodule and 3-6 months is pretty typical to watch for any growth. A lot of people sit on "nodule watch."

I would at least push for a full lung scan to be sure. Just my opinion, especially since they didn't mention calcification of the nodule that they did find.

Good luck and keep us posted. I'm also for a second opinion.

It is surprising that the doctor didn't think it necessary to do a full scan of both lungs. I think I would at least push for that. If this small nodule is the only one, then wait and see might called for right now, but if there are other nodules, I would think that would demand more attention.
