Hi peoples, Its official, she has Small Cell Lung Cancer with Brain Mets and small lumps in her lymph glands in her lungs...

I don't really know what this is going to entail for her, but the docs have prescribed 2 days of whole head radiotherapy for 10 minutes, then chemo after she recovers from that....

This is really scary stuff peoples...

Whats going to happen? Anyone with similar stories???

Sorry to hear dalnikki, The fight begins. I understand that they have to be very aggressive fighting small cell because it is an aggressive form of cancer, Pending on the size of mets in the brain and location there can be several side effects. Tiredness and hearing problems from the radiation and when the tumors swell anything can happen. She will need you to be reassuring, because at times she may feel like she is loosing it. Latter when the chemo begins and starts having it's effects she will likely loose her appetite, nothing will smell or taste good, for that I thank God for Ensure, it helped me through some tough times. She will eventually loose her hair, I think Radiation makes it go faster than Chemo, with chemo, my hair started coming out in a month, I waited a couple weeks longer until my son came back from the Navy so I could get my hair cut with him and make it an event, that would be nice if your mom could share that experience with someone she loves.
Be sure to come here often to share what the two of you are going through, there will be some tough times, hopefully in a couple months things will slowly get better. Your mom is very fortunate to have to fight along side her.
I'll be praying for the two of you.
God Bless
Dan

Dalnikki,

My husband has LC with brain mets. He has had WBR, 15 session in a row. Carbo/Taxol chemo since June. He was really tired with radiation, and lost his hair on the last session. He was having tremendous headaches prior to radiation, but it really relieved his symptoms, along with steroids. Chemo is no picnic, but I believe he has done really great compared to some. He has moments, but with steroid increase, his appetite has been okay. He also has lymph node involvement. I will pray for your whole family. This is a journey I don't wish on anyone - but you can and will find support here. Just post whenever you need a shoulder to cry on, an answer to a ? and to keep us all filled in on this journey of yours.

In His Service -

Hi dalnikki; This is a tough journey. Can be overwhelming when you are new to it. Keep in mind that everyone is different. One treatment can affect people in different ways. My husband had a rough time with his Chemo and Radiation and also other problems and yet when the treatments were all done, it all did its job. Today things are much better. I have known people that were hardly bothered by their chemo treatments.

Try to be as supportive as you can. Keep in mind that the emotions will also be all over the place. I didn't even realize for a while how emotional my husband was.

SCLC is faster growing and needs to be treated asap. I will have you both in my prayers.

Dalnikk,

My sincerest sympathy on this diagnosis for your MIL. They will do what they can with treatment to slow it down as best as they can, but plan on spending as much quality family time as you can with her.

We will be here to answer any questions and help in whatever way we can.

Again, I'm so very sorry to hear this news. I just passed the second anniversary on my best friend's loss from this type of lung cancer, so I am somewhat familiar with this too.

Best of luck and prayers,

PBJ
