Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to tell you all how well my husband is doing. On September 4th my husband, Danny, had his entire right lung removed due to squamous cell carcinoma. He had one bump in the road while in hospital when he had atrial flutter but has since conquered that. So far, with only his left lung and 40% lung capacity, Danny has stopped using oxygen supplementation. He can drive and walk around a small store comfortably. His pain is very minimal and he uses motrin when it flares up.
I feel very lucky to have my husband's cancer caught early enough to surgically remove it. Many posts that I have read here tell horror stories of doctors ignoring symptoms and not doing tests as simple as xrays. I guess the moral of the story is to be aggressive and to be your own medical advocate. Don't take anything lying down and demand to have your symptoms addressed, it is a matter of life and death.
Peace, strength and courage to all of you,

Splendid absolutely great to hear some good news.
Some are lucky and chosen, its just one of those things, we win some, we loose some....
But...You are right Doctors ignore us too often..There should be a lung cancer awareness day meaning everyone screened..

Your so right about doctors ignoring symptoms! One did that with my Mom since Feburary, till we changed doctors in late July!
I'm so glad to hear a good story! I'm SO glad they caught your husbands cancer so early! He is indeed very lucky! _________________ In 08/08, they told my 95 year old Mom she had 2.1cm lump in her lung. After cat and pet scan, one doc said its spread to the lymph nodes around her aorta. First biopsy, doc said it was cancer, pathologist said not enough tissue. Second biopsy it showed negative for cancer! |

Hello onecoyote. I am so happy that things are going well for you. I guess taking one whole lung is easier than taking just two lobes. Danny is really doing well, even with the atrial fib setback.
You are so very right about having to be our own advocate. It takes a lot to learn about the diseases though, but we are the ones that really care.
Take care of yourself and hope you are doing okay. I have been scarce around here as I don't have as much computer time as I did. Hopefully that will change up the road. _________________ Mary

Thank you to everyone here at the forum. I tell everyone I meet at the VA hospital how wonderful it is to come here and chat with people who understand what you are going through. I count my blessings everyday for the opportunity to have my husband by my side, healthy and happy.
We had a checkup yesterday with cardiology and surgery. They said Danny is on track with his recovery and there was no further need for cardiac anti-arrhythmic medication. Danny does have to wear a Holter monitor for 24 hours just to check how his heart is doing without meds. So, no more visits for 3 months....hooray!
Mary, so glad to hear from you. I know how busy life can get but especially caring for a recovering hubby. You are right when you said a pneumonectomy is easier than a lobectomy in terms of recovery, no drainage tubes ect. The bad part of a whole lung removal is the loss of lung function. Danny now has only 40%, he is doing well considering but it is hard for him to get used to. Well wishes to your hubby and I hope you are taking it easy.
To everyone here, thanks for the opportunity to read your stories and to share mine.
