My sister seems to be going downhill. She has finished her palliative chemotherapy. She has been told there is now rib involvement and she has to have calcium infusions every month and is due for another blood transfusion tomorrow. She has had her morphine and other pain meds upped and has a hugely swollen stomach.
I feel that she is not telling us everything, but I have to be guided by her. Is it normal to have a huge swollen stomach, or is this a sign of Ascites.
Hate not knowing and feeling so helpless. |

Hi Sam. Ascites is a sign of fluid building up in the abdomen. It can be drained off. It usually presents as a swollen abdomen. Whether there is a side-effect from the treatment she is having I wouldn't know. Others may have a clearer idea.
I am sorry - it is clearly a difficult time for you, and very hard if the person is not totally forthcoming. |

Oh Sam,
This has been such a difficult road for you and your sister. I have heard of ascites, but have not first hand experience.
I just pray that they are doing everything possible to minimize the symptoms with pain killers.
Vee's right -- it is hard when you are flying in the dark, but it's what her wishes are for the time being. Doesn't make it any easier on you though.
Hugs,

Dear Sam
I'm sorry to hear about your Sis' current condition. I do hope & pray her pain management is sufficient & she's not suffering too much.
Your concerns about the "unknown" are very valid & I do empathise with you here. We had similar worries when my Bro was in the latter stages of his illness. Mum, my Sis & I felt there wasn't sufficient information being shared with us & it was worrying & frustrating. There were moments of high tension between his family & us during discussions. It was not nice to be in that position.
Thinking of you & your Sis.
Cheers, Angie. _________________ Brother diagnosed with GBMIV Feb 07
