Confused Hi everyone hope today is a good day.

I would like to ask the forum for advice. Today dad attended his 4 chemo cycle for extensive SCLC carboplatin/etoposide.( cancer in right lung and spreading into left lung)
His oncologist spoke to him this morning and told dad that he is stopping chemotherapy and that he has done very well while undertaking his chemotherapy.
Then he said that they usually would offer radiation to his chest but they are not because he does not want to craete any more scar tissue in his lungs.
He then said that dad will have a scan in about 4 weeks to see how he is doing. He also reported that it is unlikely thatt a second line chemtherapy would be used in the future. How can he say this when he has not even seen the results of the future scan. I asked oncologist that when dad was first diagnosed had the cancer spread and he replied No. My mum and I are aware that there is no cure for extensive SCLC but it sounds like they are giving up on him already.
Dad is very mobile and active still goes fishing,shopping plays his darts. Is it wise to ask about a second opinion if after the scan they will not offer Dad second line chemotherapy if he has a good response from chemotherapy. His chemotherapy has been palliative but visually he looks a hell of a lot healthier than when hs was first diagnosed.
I spoke with Macmillan Cancer nurses todaty as mum is getting really upset at the possibility that dad will not be with us for Xmas and that she originally thought that dad will be around a couple of years. We did not even know there are specialist Lung Cancer Nurses available for us to ask questions to. We are scared now that this could be the start of the end. Has anybody experienced a similiar situation as this.

thank you everyone for listening

posie, as long as they are planing further scans to follow your father's cancer for growth, they have not given up on him. Four weeks will feel like an eternity for you, but it will give time for the cancer to show whether or not it still is alive.

Others are better able than I to share their stories with Lung Cancer since I have never had to face it.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Posie;
I think a second opinion is always a good Idea, my oncologist was very supportive to help me gather the info for the other doctors. I think that with an aggressive cancer like SCLC, some of the thoughts might be looking to help the quality of his remaining days.
God Bless
Dan
