I am 65 years old and have had a mastectomy of one breast. The surgery was performed 6 months ago and I am taking Tamoxifen. My obgyn suggested it might be a good idea to remove my ovaries. However, my oncologist seems to think it unnecessary because the ovaries no longer produce estrogen. I would appreciate another opinion or opinions?? I have read that the removal of ovaries is recommended for premenopausal women but what about post menopausal ?

Hi,
I don't know the answer to your question, but just wanted to say I would listen to an oncologist over an OB/GYN on this issue. Your oncologist is the one trained to treat cancer. I too have only heard of oopherectomy for pre-menopausal patients.

Linda

I think your oncologist is right. Your ovaries at this age are not producing estrogens anymore. But the rationale for removal might be that you are at higher risk of ovarian cancer. Maybe given your family history (if you have a history of ovarian ca, breast ca), it might be reasonable. But for treatment of the breast cancer per se it is usually not indicated for post-menopausal women.

regards,
Leo
