I'm a 17 year old female who's mother has smoked since she was 15, and she is now 47. While she only smokes about 10-15 cigarettes a day, which is lower than alot of people, I'm very worried about her health. More specifically, I'm worried about her chance of getting lung cancer, or other life threatening diseases associated with smoking. I don't want to be left parentless at such a young age.

Every now and then, I talk to her about how I wish she could try to quit and she always gets this hint of anger "I've heard it all before" tone in her voice. Thus, I would really appreciate any suggestions as to how I can help my mother understand my concern. I've printed off several information booklets from the Canadian Cancer Society but they don't seem to do any good.

Thereīs not much you can do.

Most smokers DO know smokeīs bad, mmkay? But they take it as a calculated risk.

My mother smokes 2 or 3 packs a day, HER mother died, the Big C, not lung, breast, but she smoked 2 or 3 packs a day too and I can vouch it didnīt helped her health.

You can try a little blackmail, tell her how do you feel and how do you worry, donīt blame her, just ask if she can take it easy, for both of you.

Good luck! Fifteen cigs a day is a lot, but if she really wants to quit, she'll be able to. But it's a decision she has to make. It's an addiction, and pushing to quit can just make it worse.
