| Boldelly: Call you daughter's oncologist. Since chemo indiscriminately attacks the body's soft tissues (and the body has a weakened ability to fight off common pathogens) she might have an infection that might need to be treated by a gynecologist. My oncologist warned me about yeast infections and lack of menstruation-- which I had already noticed prior to diagnosis. Hang in there-- I know how hard my illness was on my own mother (a cancer survivor herself). |

Thanks so much for your information. My daughter had to be hospitalized Friday and we came home today because she started running a fever. They finally did swab and said that it was just the mucosa that you usually get in the mouth or throat (which she has had those), but he said that the tissue is the same by being moist and soft skin. They are very, very, painful for her and he says that there is nothing he can do but give her pain meds. We hope since she had the two units of blood and her white counts look a little better that it will begin to heal, the ones in her mouth are looking better. She has had about 3 yeast infections and the case of vaginitis since November 2006. They say because she is sensitive to the antibiotics and they can cause yeast infections.
Thanks for replying to my post and it really encourages me when I hear of people like your mother who are survivors. My baby girl (16 years old and still my baby girl LOL) is going to beat this and she is going to live a long good life.
Thanks again for your information helps me know that she is not the only one. Our oncologist was telling us that this is rare but it does happen. |

| I found this article that stated that patients with severe neutropenia (low white cell counts) are suseptable to infections which may manifest in the mucous membranes (mouth, nose, genitalia). It states that the skin is the second most common infection site, manifesting as ulcers and other types of skin irritations and prolonged wound healing. The genitalia and perirectum will also be affected. I think this is what is going on with her because Friday we were admitted to the hospital with fever of 101.8 and that night spiked at 102. This was caused by an infection and her white count was like 300 almost nill. They gave her two units of blood and kept her on her neupogen shots (helps bone marrow reproduce white cells faster). He infected areas are looking better but as still very painful. Just thought I might share this information with you all. |

| Boldelly: I am sorry that you had such a scary weekend with your daughter, but it sounds like things are turning around. Is she finished with her cycle of chemo? You both are in my thoughts. |

Thanks for thinking of us and yes she is finished with the chemo part of it (Thank God!!!!!). Now we retest/re-scan, CT, PET, Gallium, and bone scan. Then we start 14 weeks of radiation. She is anxious about the radiation because she does not know what to expect, I mean the Radiologist talked to her and took her on a tour of the department, but she is still anxious. Kinda ready to start so we can get it over with and maybe return to some kind of normalcy (sp?).
