I have a 3 year old who has had a fever on and off for about 6 weeks. She has no other symptoms. We have taken her to the pediatrician, urgent care, and ER and everyone says that her blood work comes back normal even though she has a very high fever. That seems odd to me. Today I was told to bring her back to the ER. Her fever was 105 and her blood work was again, NORMAL! They think she might have a low WBC since it is normal when she is sick. They told me they have no clue what is wrong with her.
I have enough common sense to know that low WBC can sometimes be leukemia or auto-immune defficiency. Has anyone ever had these symptoms or know someone who has?
I am just a worried mom who is tired of seeing her baby suffer from these fevers with no answers from doctors.
Thanks so much! |

Allison, I can only imagine how worried you must be! Have they not hospitalized her to gain control of her fever? 105 is high even for a child. I know that there is such a think as an idiopathic fever, that is, a fever with an unknown cause. However, her fever still needs to be controlled. Are you taking her to a major children's hospital? If not, maybe you should go there for a second opinion. Whether it is leukemia or an auto-immune deficiency, it should be identified. Have they talked about a bone marrow biopsy to check for leukemia?
I know I am asking more questions than I am answering. You and your daughter are in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know what you find out.
I am moving this thread to the childhood cancer forum. You might get better information form them. _________________ Jim

| I took her to Children's hospital in Dallas. They were full so they sent her home. We are just doing tylenol at home. She woke up with 104 this morning. They only did more blood work yesterday. We have to go back to see the Infectious Disease specialists this week. If her faver stays 104 or higher for another day or two I will take her back to the ER. I am not happy with her having a fever this long and we are still at home just doing tylenol! |

Allison, I have been to the Dallas Children's Medical Center. It is a fine hospital... if you can get in.
Another option are the hospitals in Houston (Memorial-Hermann, Texas Children's, or MD Anderson). All of these are centers of excellence when treating childhood cancers. Of course, if it turns out to be some form of cancer, St. Jude in Memphis is by far the best (in my humble opinion).
A fever of 104 in a child is where I draw the line. It gets dangerous above that... especially over a prolonged time. I do hope and pray your medical team (where ever it is) can identify its cause or at least get it under control soon. _________________ Jim

Yes, I am very familiar with St Jude. I grew up in Memphis. The problem we are having is simply finding out what the problem is in the first place. I wish they would have admitted her for the fever so they could keep an eye on her but they don't seem to think it is an issue.
They want us to just keep in touch with our pediatrician. The problem with that is that we went to the pediatrician first and they could find anything wrong. I feel like we are moving backwards.
I just want answers! |

| Hi AllisonG, I'm so sorry that your daughter is sick and you are having such a worrying time. Being a mother myself I always go with my gut instinct and if you strongly believe that there is something seriously wrong with your daughter then keep on taking her and demand answers. You can never be too careful when it comes to children. Better to be safe than sorry. I hope you get help and answers soon. Thinking of you and your daughter. Jen. |

I took my daughter to the doctor today. She now has a new infection and a new fever. They are going to test her for neutropenia. Anyone have any experience with this? I read that this was sometimes a symptom of leukemia. She will also still be tested by an immunologist.
Any advice is welcome. |

| Hi AlisonG, I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is sicker. It must be terrible for you not knowing what's going on and also for your daughter feeling so sick. I don't know anything about neutropenia. but you should ask the Dr who is ordering the test what they are testing for and hopefully they will be able to explain it to you. I pray that they work out what is going on and that it is not too serious. Please keep in touch and let us know how you and your daughter are going. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Jen. |

she was diagnosed at 1 month by chance(she had fever and i took her to the hospital... and her neutrophiles went down to 0 in a couple of days, the with stimulating factors went up again)... we have made several tests to exclude genetic types of n, metabolic and immune deseases that are correlated to it.... she's been ok since the, but i keep her isolated - no contact with other people if not completely healthy, no shops, no crowded places...
has your doughter had any blood count done before? how is she now? sorry for my english, i write from italy!
Take care! bye!
asja
p.s. as far as i know, leukemia may be connected to neutropenia as a development of it, but it is rare... if the total white count is ok you should not worry too much! |
