I've heard and read a lot saying so. So a lump that is tender is more likely benign. Is this true? Can the situation change, i.e. a malignant tumor be tender first, then became nontender? Also I'm curious why malignant tumors are often painless and nontender; any explanations? Thanks in advance.

Kelly, I believe, Until you know for sure. Have ANY lump, sore or otherwise looked at. Alot of sore/tender spots can be because of the area. nerves and blood circulation in that area.

Kelly, I am not sure if most cancers are indeed painless. Certainly brain and lung cancer often are painless. However, I would think the head and neck cancers, cancers of the digestive track, pancreatic cancer, bone cancers, and others can indeed cause a lot of pain.

Any noticeable lump whether painful or not should be checked be a doctor as soon as possible.

Count me in on the "check with the doctor" theme! I was told in the past that tender lumps in the breast are usually from dysplasia (fibrocystic disease). Unless you are actually diagnosed with something like breast dysplasia, then you don't know for sure. Better to be sure than sorry later.

Good luck and hopefully it will be just a bump or lump or something!
