Hi All,
I wish my dad would have talked to someone who had been thru treatment. My dad is having a huge problem with fatigue after his first round of chemo. He has never felt good since he was diagnosed. I know that Dad is not drinking enough fluids. I know that he will be getting fluids tomorrow. How much is too much sleep? How do you manage the fatigue?

It's much easier with my mom because she has had her sister-in-law and cousin who she is close to go thru cancer treatment. They are going to be a huge support for her. In fact, my aunt is taking her to the appt. this Friday with the nurse practitioner.

Kristi

Kristi, I am so sorry about your father. I can only speak for my experience and that of my father... neither of us had lung cancer so this may not apply to your father. Both my father and I had a great problem with fatigue during our chemotherapies. I am not to sure how much sleep is too much sleep but I know that we needed a lot of sleep.

I continue to have fatigue but my current fatigue is due to thyroid problems.

Be sure to make sure your father's medical team knows about his fatigue. There might be something they can do to help him.

He has an appt. with the oncologist tomorrow. I know he won't ask but I will.

Hi kristi

You obviously care for your dad Smile
I got really tired during my treatment. When I started the doctor told me that the one thing everybody got with the chemo I had, was fatigue. Hair loss, nausea, anorexia not everyone gets, but fatigue comes with the treatment. Sometimes I slept 18 hours a day. I also slept at odd times. I think your Dad will sleep as much as he needs too. Help him keep his fluids up and cheer him up as best you can and don't forget to look after yourself.

Thinking of you and your Dad

My dad has low counts. His WBC was 0.1 and platelets were 5,000 yesterday. The platelets were low enough that he had to get platelets infused. He does not drink much. He sees the oncologist for a checkup. He also has a blood draw and fluids. All on Monday.

Dear Kristi

I'm sorry to hear the fatigue is so prevalent for your Dad at the mo! I have read on the internet about chemo & fatigue & it can be very debilitating. Apparently, your Dad should embrace it & rest & sleep if he needs it.

I was recently referred to the American Brain Tumour webiste which has information on this. Reading this might help explain a few things for you & your Dad?

Also it his blood counts are too low this can also be attributed to the fatigue. Has his HB (iron) levels been checked too?

God bless you & yours & I pray the appt today goes well.

Cheers, Angie.

Things are on the upswing! Dad's counts are slowly coming up. His WBC is at 0.7 (better than 0.1!). His platelets were 48 (much better than 5!). I realize the numbers are still low but anything in the upward move is music to my ears. Smile He is eating and drinking better today. He had a scrambled egg, two Ensures, and a bowl of soup. He goes back for a visit with the NP, blood draw, and IV fluids on Friday. We are getting him tanked up so he can attend hs oldest granddaughter's wedding Saturday night. One of our next-door neighbors is loaning us a wheelchair for Dad to use.

Oh, I am so glad that his blood count has improved! I can only imagine who good you feel about this.

I will continue to keep you and your father in my thoughts and prayers.

Kristi,

Gosh, I didn't know you were posting in this section. I'm so over focused on the lung cancer section. Sorry! Embarassed

Good news to hear the counts are going up for your Dad. I know how much those little itty-bitty movements can raise your spirits.

Remember, anything like soup, ice cream, etc. counts for fluids, so sneak those kinds of things and he'll stay hydrated.

Does he take Neulasta or Neupogen to help with the WBC? Has the doctor put him on antibiotics? My husband didn't have count issues, but if the WBC ever dipped below 4 (I think) he would automatically be put on antibiotics for his protection. They are so vulnerable when those WBC's are low. Please make sure his doc knows he will be in a big social situation on Saturday as he could be at a risky exposure. Maybe he'd consider a little disposable mask and keep the hand sanitizer handy.

Hugs,
PBJ
