| I recently joined this forum because I have a question and I don't really have another good place to ask this. My best friend recently told me that her boyfriend of over a year just informed her that he has had lymph node cancer for more than two years. What struck me as "odd" about the story was the fact that he has never been actually diagnosed by a doctor, he just knows he has it. He told her that he felt lumps, went to a specialist, and all the doctor told him was "come back if it gets worse" Now I'm not sure but I don't think if a doctor thought someone had cancer they would want to wait at all for it to get worse before they treat it. Then he told her that he has gotten weaker over the years and can "feel his body dying" He says that he doesn't want to go to a doctor becuase he doesn't want to be cut open and he thinks doctors are only out to take people's money. He thinks he is going to cure it from getting these mushrooms from somewhere in Asia that are supposed to cure cancer but doctors don't use them because then they wouldn't get money. My friend completely believes him and I really think that he's lying. I think he really feels he has cancer but he doesn't and I'm not really sure why. He also told her that he was supposed to be dead by last christmas but has kept himself alive by taking A LOT of vitamins. I just want to know if this is actually possible or if anyone has heard of these mushrooms. And if he doesn't have cancer how do I go about telling my friend. Also, I am the first person my friend has told about this and she said her boyfriend told her not to tell anyone becuase he didn't want people to feel sorry for him. I am really confused and I hope I can get some help here. Thanks for reading this, sorry if it's a little lengthy. |

Hello
A diagnosis of cancer in most cases will be made when you have a biopsy of something. Sometimes in very advanced cancers it is obvious that it is cancer.
But what I think is happening is that your friend is afraid to go to the doctor, and is just believing that he has cancer. Whether he has it or not, I don't know. Also, there is no magic bullet for this, and these mushrooms are unlikely to have some effect.
You should talk to your friend to tell him to visit a doctor to find out what he really has. He can then look at options for therapy.
regards,

| I did talk to my friend and I told her that I don't think her boyfriend had it. and she got really offended so I just backed off. I am almost positive he doesn't have cancer or that he would be able to walk around with it for years and live off of vitamins and still smoke cigarettes and not lead a very healthy life. I guess I am just wondering what to say to my friend because I think she's being lied to but i need some kind of proof and not just my own personal opinion. |

| I think the boyfriend needs to see a doctor but one for his head. That's crazy talk. He probably does THINK he has cancer, but mushrooms or no mushrooms, you don't just walk around with cancer for years. Sadly, I have had several friends get cancer this year. It has been a bad year. My best friend was diagnosed with stage 3 lymph node cancer this past spring. Six months before this he had a complete physical for work and was in perfect health (no cancer, nothing). Six months later he was stage 3 in the ICU on oxygen so he could breath. He did see a doctor when he got the first lump and they did give him antibiotics and told him to come back if the lump didn't go away. It didn't go away, but he didn't go back to the doctor right away which is how he ended up in the ICU. But this was WEEKS not YEARS. I don't know if this is proof or not, but maybe it will convince them to get him some help. He needs some kind of help because that is no way to live your life. The boyfriend may have Munchowsen disease where someone thinks they are dying but they are not. I saw it on a medical show recently. |

Unless he goes and gets a proper dignosis he cannot say for sure he has it. and everyone is different it took me just over 2 years to get my ovarian cancer diagnosed. sometimes they just do not show until it has spread. _________________ To live is Christ to die is gain. |

Hello and Welcome
There are many types of lymph cancer that are slow growing, they are called indolent lymphoma's. The most common treatment for these is in fact to wait and watch. These cancers are incurable, unless they turn into aggressive lymphomas which can then be treated. Although they are almost impossible to treat, they are rarely fatal, in fact you can have them for 40+ years and die from totally unrelated causes.
Maybe he has an indolent lymphoma and he is overly pessimistic? If he had an aggressive lymphoma he would be dead by now, as he has not had any treatment, so he definitely does not have this.
If your friend loves this man any input from you , even if you consider it to be in her best interests, will be viewed as interference and you may lose your friend. Be careful
