I am 46 year old male, diagnosed 2 weeks ago with stage 4 lympocytic lymphoma. My oncologist is Dr. Mike Carrol sutter cancer center in Sacramento California. He has told me that we will "watch and wait",with full body ct scans every 3 months. I can't seem to get when and if treatment should start. lymph nodes are enlarged in neck region abdomen and grion area, and there is a 40% cell invasion in bone marrow and being newly diagnosed I feel a little lost,I left a post 2 days ago has beeen read alot but no respones. MR. brainman can you help me at all, I see my doc in Sept again and I do have a list of questions. as for right now he says keep living my life and get my type 1 diabetes a little better under control....... any thoughts or ideas would be great at this point and thanks in advance Hap

Hi

You sound a bit stressed. Don't be. Take your cues from your Doctor, if he is relaxed about your condition you should be too. Your type of lymphoma is a very slow growing lymphoma. It does respond to chemotherapy , but it is incurable. At some point the doctor will start chemo, to get a bit of regression, but as the condition is incurable, it will come back. This can go on for 30 years, so I would not panic, it is not warranted in this case.

I have a friend with chronic Lymphocytic leukeamia which is almost an identical condition to yours, except with less lymph node involvement, and she has been receiving chemo about every 5 or 6 years. She is doing fine and looks and acts the complete picture of health, mind you she is very fit. She actually stopped work at the same time I did to get her second lot of chemo. She has been back for a while now.

If by some chance your lymphoma changes to an aggressive type like DLBCL then it can be treated and cured, so even if this does happen it is not a bad thing. This transformation happens in about 30% of cases. Also 10% to 20% of this type progress to chronic lymphocytic leukemia.( described above)

I know it is a shock when you get the diagnosis, but you need to just take a few deep breaths and relax to get things into perspective. You will be able to lead a fairly normal and long life with this condition.

Good luck on your Journey

Chemoman<
This is what I was kind of looking for!!!! My Dr. has said that I probably have the Lympocitic lukemia as well. Yeah I would say these last couple months have taken a toll. I also am a very healthy 46 year old with type 1 diabetes for 35 five years. It has been hard to get the info I have been after. Can you tell me at what point treatment started for your friend?Or does that change from person to person? I do want to stay on top of my disease as I am a A.D. (Almost Doctor), because of my diabetes, now I will just have to add lymphoma to the A.D. list Very Happy !!! Thanks again for the info and back to kicking lifes butt I go!!!!!!!! Hap

Hi Hap

I don't what the cues are for her to get her chemo. Probably the numbers on her blood tests I would say. It was about 5 years since her last treatment. As I said she is doing fine.

Cheers Hap and good luck with it.
