My mom was recovering well after surgery. she only complained about headache and nothing else. She was eating and talking well. Her surgery was done on 19th june and her firstly diagnosed astrocytoma grade 3 or 4 turned out to be some bacterial or viral infection.

She had some fits two days ago and her tongue turned in a strange way like in a patient of paralysis. She has some weakness in left hand. She has problems in swallowing and is on liquid diet. She is also vomiting and has fever.

Its looks that her condition has deteriorated and some symptoms are appearing which were not there before surgery or even after two weeks of surgery. They just appeared suddenly during last two days. Any suggestions what could be reason of all this. Please share your experiences, views.

Regards
Ali

It sounds like you have the answer to your original question... it is not cancer. However, I am not sure which is worse... cancer or an infection Sad. Sounds like either are pretty bad.

Do you think that her left sided weakness is due to a stroke?

I dont think its a stroke. Also the doctors did not said any thing about this being a stroke. We talked to the surgeon and he said that these type of symptoms may arise during the recovery period.

Did anyone experienced these type of symptoms after brain surgery. Is there any possibility of having fits and stroke like symptoms after brain surgery.

Hi Ali,

I was on anti-seizure medication already so I did not have any seizures (fits). I do still have some right-sided weakness because of the damage from the cancer and surgery. But my weakness began when I had the surgery... not weeks after. That is why I am seriously wondering if your mother has not had a stroke. Her tongue turning is another sign of a stroke (paralysis). Have they done a post-surgery MRI? Hate to keep pressing this issue, but if it sounds like a stroke, looks like a stroke, maybe it is a stroke. Without a scan, there is no way to tell for sure.
