Hello Jim , Jen and to all forum members
Just some updates on my fathers annaplastic astrocytoma 3 . He is still in chemo 10 cycles so far , his overall condition is great , still sometimes confusion but not no where near how it was . I am not sure how many more months he can go with chemo , I have to repeat again in Kosovo there are lack of oncologist and seems to me they do not have much experience speacially with temodal as new chemoterapy, even i got some info in UK standard is 6 months. We are paying ourself so just wondering for how long hi can use them. He tolerates them very well and seems they do help .
thanks again u great people and hope u well JIM |

Hi Petrit, I too am glad to hear that your father is doing well. It must be hard to have to pay for the treatment yourself. We were very lucky that we didn't have to pay for it as I don't know how we could have afforded it. I did learn the other day from my sister that anyone who is below a GBMIV do have to pay for it, which I was shocked as normally it is those people that have the better chance of survival. Andrew's course of chemo was 7 weeks while having radio and then 6 months. In answer to your question from April (I'm sorry I didn't reply back then, I have only just read it, for many reasons I don't get on the site as often as I would like to/) Andrew has not been on any medication for about 1 and half years now and he is doing great. Still has his moments of confusion etc but most people wouldn't even know. We both agree this is a small price to pay - his oncologist after operation told us he would at best have only around 2 years left. It's now been 2 years and 2 months and no sign of it at all. I hope your father continues to improve. Thinking of you all. _________________ Love to all. Jen.

Hi Petrit, we were told that the standard treatment was for small dose of chemo while doing radiation and then a small break and then 6 months of chemo (5 days out of every month). The dose was suppose to increase each month but Andrew reacted badly when they increased it in the 2nd month so they kept him on the lower dose for the entire 6mths. We were told (I think) that if the tumour started to come back and grow he would probably go on chemo again. But fortunately this hasn't happened yet. I'm not sure if different drs have different ideas on treatment, but from what I gather this is their first line of attack. _________________ Love to all. Jen.

Hi Petrit
I am so happy to read your update & that your Father is doing well with his treatment.
My Brother has been taking Temodal since Feb 2007 for his GBMIV! He had a period of about 6 weeks after 2nd debulking surgery in May 2007 where he was only taking anti-seizure meds & then after some regrowth went back on Temodal-5 days on 23 off. In Feb this year Brother had Gliadel (chemo wafers) placed in tumour bed & was without Temodal for 2 months. Then in May 2008 was put back on Temodal 5 days on 23 off.
My Brother reacted badly to radiation & only finished 4.5 weeks of the 6 week regime.
It is difficult for us here to advise on how long your Father should remain on Temodal? Everyone's treatment is different! You will need to have complete faith in your Father's medical team in regards to this. No doubt your Father's condition appears to have been looked after well so far. You are an amazing Daughter to be researching since last year & advocating for your Father, under difficult circumstances & when the "contemporary" treatments are not so readily available to you.
May God continue to bless you & your Father.
Cheers, Angie. _________________ Brother diagnosed with GBMIV Feb 07

There are two issues involved:
1. In one year has your father forgotten how to drive? Unless the cancer has affected his memory in general, I would say the answer is probably not. On this issue he is probably going to be safe to drive again.
2. Has your father had any seizures? If so, how long has it been since his last one? The laws vary from State to State, Country to Country but most require a person to be seizure free to a certain length of time before driving. In some cases, this requires a release to drive from the medical team.
When I was first diagnosed, my doctor told me not to drive for 1 year. I have to confess that I did drive but just a little. But then I have always been happy for someone else to drive so that I could nap .
Ask your father's doctor about this since it does change from State to State and since everyone is different.
By the way, it is great to hear from you. _________________ Jim
