I'm curious as to when you start being in remission.

I was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer last November at age 20 and was given a temporary illeostomy. It had spread to 10 lymph nodes. I started 6 months of chemo soon after and finished that last month. The illeostomy was just reversed. I'm not due any more treatment, just regular check ups from now on.

At what point did I start being in remission?

Thanks.

I am not sure. I had a similar experience as you.

My doctor wanted me to keep my port in for as year. I am also getting PET scans and blood work every 3 months for the first year.

I do know we are considered 'cured' if we go five years without any signs of cancer.

You are in remission when there is an absence of active cancer.

Just a slight correction to what cptmac posted. Yes, you are in remission when there is no evidence of disease but there has to be a time frame. I read posts where members one month post treatment talk about being in remission. They may be, but it sounds to me to be too soon to be talking about remission. Gives yourself at least one year cancer free. When people ask me about my own status, I usually just say that as of my last MRI there is still no sign of recurrence.
