| I am 57 yr old with PSA level of 25. I seen a urologist. I also have difficulty urinating. He did a bladder ultra sound and urine test one week. Also arranged for a biopsy the following week. I had twelve sample tissues taking. From reading this forum, I realize psa 25 is quite high. I am wondering if anyone had a level such as this and it was just a infection. I am still waiting my result from the pathology lab. Should know by wednesday. |

Infection/inflamation can often cause high PSA readings that take some time to subside.
Keep a folder or book to record dates and relevant information, as it's difficult to recall all of it later.
Ask about size of your prostate, and obtain a print out of your biopsy report which will have a lot of information in addition to the basics.
Prostate size affects PSA production.
Biopsy readings are subjective: what looks like cancer to one person can look more normal to another. If you have any positive results, ask for a 2nd reading by an expert pathologist to confirm the details. |

Thank you for the information. The urologist did do a DRE and said the prostrat was slightly enlarged. Also when a prostrate ultrasound was done before the biopsy and again I was told that it was slightly enlarged.[/quote] |

Normally a little PSA leaks from the prostate into the blood. If the prostate is enlarged then the leakage appears exaggerated. This is probably why the PSA can be slightly abnormal in men with enlarged prostates who do not have cancer. Trauma to the prostate, as by physicians performing prostate massage, and sex might also cause minor transient elevations of PSA.
My advice is to keep a record of relevant info. Think that the PSA level in the blood can vary by about 20% from day to day. What is bad now could be normal the next day, what is bad for a person could be normal or without major consequences for another one _________________ men health questions

| I had my biopsy, all 12 core samples had a gleason score of 7. I had a bone scan and ct scan two days ago. I see my urologist again on 9/3. |

Sorry you've joined the club. But don't despair--prostate cancer is common, but deaths from it are not.
Is your Gleason 3+4 or 4+3? _________________ Replicant

| All I have is the gleason score of 7. I forgot to ask the dr. if it was 3 plus 4 or 4 plus 3. My mind went blank for a while. Anyway I have been studying a lot of literature and been writing down all my concerns and questions regarding what options are available to me. At this point I am hoping it is confined to the prostrate. Wish me luck. |

Buster,
You need to obtain a print out of your biopsy report, as it contains a lot of additional important information.
The reason Replicant asked whether your figures indicated 3+4 or 4+3 is that the first figure is the dominant one. Although both are Gleason 7, someone with 3+4 (mainly 3) would potentially have a better prognosis than 4+3 (where 4 dominant).
This and other information available to you will influence your decision on treatment options.
Best wishes. |

| Seen my urologist today. I have obtained copies of ct scan, bone scan and path report. My gleason score of 7 was a result of, right side of prostrate 3 + 3 and left side 3 + 4. Staging is T1c at this time. Bone scan is possibly showing increase of activity in the T 10 area. This may be as a result of the closeness of the camera to the skeletal system. Therefore I have been scheduled for a chest x ray and a MRI of the thoracic area during the next week. Back to waiting for these results before we can make a decision on treatment. |

| Haven.t been back to the forum since prior to my suegery. I had an open RP Oct 6. Surgeon stated that cancer did not penetrate prostate capsule. Out of 8 lymph node dissections, found 1 with some cancer. I had my cath removed yesterday. Doing the exercises and hopefully the incontinence will improve, its only been one day. I have to see my surgeon in 4 weeks for my first psa reading. He said there is a possibility that I may have to go on hormone therapy because of the one lymph node. |

Buster, thanks for reporting back. Out of curiosity, what was the post-surgical Gleason?
I think Johnw100 will concur with me that it's time to find a medical oncologist, preferably one who specializes in prostate cancer, if you have not done so already.

Buster, for whatever it is worth, I agree with Replicant; it is time to see an oncologist. It is kind of like having a car with radiator problems and taking it to Joe Mechanic down the street rather than to a shop that only works on radiators.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Buster,
Yes to see a medical oncologist expert in PC is a good suggestion.
For anyone who needs to consider hormone treatment, I always suggest reading the book by Dr Myers, "Beating Prostate Cancer: Hormonal Therapy & Diet".
Dr Myers has used hormone therapy with good results for many of his patients over a long period.
Best wishes. |
