Stereotactic Radiation for brain mets

Does anyone have any info on SRS? We have completed WBR and MAY be a candidate for SRS. I have read some info and the long term side effects look awful. Any info would be appreciated.

I do. In fact, I have had it but not for brain mets... for primary brain cancer. With me, they first made a mask for me from this plastic mesh so that my head was in the exact same position every time. Then they did a high resolution MRI to map out the exact area they wanted to target. The technical process might be hard to understand but for me as the patient, it was very easy once I got accustomed to having my head bolted down to the table. The radiation source moved around my head sending out lower than Whole Brain Radiation dosages from several different directions so that only where the radiation beams crossed received the full dosage. It really is not that hard. I did experience some temporary, localized hair loss. I would think that there would be much less long term damage than with WBR... at least that is what its intention is.

Cant say I know anything about this line of treatment. Daniels is different and now of course everything has stopped. But! I will pray for you and keep you in my thoughts. Hoping you are a good candidate and gets through this battle nicely.... God Bless Koik

We will be starting treatment next week, with 5 "doses". I really have confidence with our newest addition to the team. He spent 1 1/2 hours with us, and explained in detail. It felt good to received some good news, its been awhile. Thanks to everyone who post, it is wonderful to have such a great network.

Hello sgodshall;
I had the whole brain radiation, which was a scary though at the the time, but in two months time I went 5 to 10 mets in my brain. The blessing is that the mets were small and the treatments should be very effective against them, I was afraid of missing any unseen mets with the selective radiation method, which at first they said I could have with the 5 mets. Having the whole brain method done has risks but it seems that brain cancer is riskier to my health. So no doubt I'll have some troubles, it has effected my hearing already and likely permanently. It is a bother but a small price to pay for extended life. I hope you can report back soon so we can continue to share along with you.

with Alimta
and taking Lovenox for blood clots

My husband received WBR first, now we move on to stereotactic. The tumors (5) improved "marginally". One is 2.9cm x 2.4cm. It showed the least change. Currently receiving Carbo/Taxol, for lung. New scan showed no growth, no shrinkage. It seems we go from one battle to another. I have read your post and know you understand that. Hope you had a great "get away". Very Happy

This must be very upsetting to go through with that large of a brain met and little gain on controlling it. My mets are much smaller. I hope you can keep the faith that God can do a work on this. I will be praying for you and your husband. I wish I had other answers to give.

Let's stand up and say HURRAY! Last stereotactic treatment is tomorrow, he is doing GREAT! He has been able to work this week except for treatment days. He was off his Dexadron and lost 22 lbs. in 8 days, luckily Dr. put him back on and his is eating again. I feel very blessed this week - all the prayers are working.

YEA!! Hubby has finished with his last treatment and doing great! Chemo is Friday, but it feels like we get a break from driving and doctors for the week. He feels "normal" this week and energy has increases, appetite back and he's eating everything in site. I realize that our "Normal" has changed, but this week feels like before LC. We won't know results from tx for 6 weeks, but for TODAY we are hopeful.
