You need to go get a physical. One of the things that your doctor should do is a chest x-ray. Lung cancer does not always show up on a chest x-ray. After the x-ray, you should request a CT scan.

Please let us know what you find out.

You will not get any medical advice here. In fact, you will not get any medical advice online. If I were you, make an appt. with a physician to get checked out. Getting checked out by a physician is the only way you are going to know.

First of all, please stop smoking.

Lung cancer in a young person like yourself is rare but not impossible but the earlier you kick the habit the better off your health will be all the way around.

There are many things that could cause the symptoms you describe and a doc would likely rule those out before ordering scans and things to look for cancer.

Get a check-up, have the doc listen to your lungs and heart--that is the first step. But, again, start now to lower your risks for these diseases. if you read any of the stories here of the suffering that people endure you will see what your future may hold if you don't take care of yourself now.

even if you do--there are no guarantees. but, you can reduce the odds

some people develop lung cancer with no family history, no history of smoking , etc. But enough do, that quitting smoking would be a good first step in living a healthier life.

My dad smoked and drank for about 25 years and I am pretty sure that is why he developed throat as well as lung cancer. My grandfather on the other side of the family died of it in 1955--he had been a wood carver and had inhaled many cancerous things in his work including particulate--oh yeah and a heavy smoking habit Confused

19 isn't too young to start planning for the future.

Also if you are concerned about cancer, look into studies about the connection between HPV and oral cancers. there is some evidence that suggests that HPV may lead to oral cancers which can lead to lung cancer and that some cases in young people may be linked to that.

good luck

and did I mention stopping smoking? Twisted Evil

Okplayer, it could be something as simple as pleurisy, which is very painful but can be treated simply. You need to know what it is so you won't be so worried and scared. Peace of mind is worth everything and believe me, going to see the doctor will set your mind at ease. You can not find medical treatment online. Those who try to self diagnose or use websites to self diagnose can be placing their lives in jeopardy. It is simply not worth it.

And ditto what they said.....stop smoking. It will cause you less problems....less chance of things like pleurisy, sinus infections, pneumonia, cancer, etc. And, if you ever need surgery, if you are a smoker, the risk for infections is higher in smokers. This was told to my mom by her orthopedic surgeon, who wanted her to stop smoking for at least a month prior to knee replacement surgery, which she never had, byt the way.

Go to the doctor for your health and your own peace of mind. Chances are very good they will not request all the scans you are worried about. Our minds tend to go to the worst case scenario when faced with something and we get scared. That is human nature. Most of the time, it is something simple. So, GO, ok?! Let us know what happens.

Okplayer,
Your symptoms could be caused by a myriad of reasons, some as simple as overuse of your shoulder. I know that when I had gallbladder problems I never had pain in the area of my gallbladder but had pain between my shoulder blades(who would have associated the two). Please follow what the other posters have recommended that you do, quit smoking NOW and see a doctor in a clinic if you can't afford an office visit. They will at the very least take an xray and rule out cancer. You may be surprised at what this turns out to be, maybe just heartburn!
Take care

thank you for taking your time and for all the great advice. i have yet to call my doctor for a physical but will do that sometime this week. at first i was a little skeptical to come on here and ask a question like this but it seemed like i would get helpful answers here. But i do still have a few worries, i do not think it is pleurisy because the only symptom is a back back ache near the shoulders. could there be many reasons for symptoms like this besides muscles problems/infections? because i do not think those are my problems as i researched on pleurisy it is described with colds and shivers. i really hope its just some normal(?) pain but i have heard shoulder pains are associated with cancer.

There are a lot of things associated with cancer.

You are not a doctor, we are not doctors--stop trying to diagnose yourself and let a doctor do it.
