My brother Jon, was just diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer 3/18/05 and it has spread to his lungs, stomach and liver and he has been told he has 4 months to live.
Does anyone have any information for me about whether or not he should have any treatments, would it be worth it or not. He just went into the hospital 2 weeks ago with a blood clot on his leg that traveled to his groin area and he was in pain so he went to the emergency room and this is the diagnosis that he comes home with. I know nothing about cancer, we have not had it in our family. Any advice or anything would help, I really just don't know what is really going on. I believe I am overwhelmed.
Thank you Sad [/i]

Sorry to hear about your brother. Unfortunately, there is little in terms of chemotherapy or other active treatments that can be offered for metastatic esophageal cancer. There are certainly ways to try to improve nutrition and strength, but this disease is very difficult to treat.

best regards,
Leo

Dear Kat,

I'm sorry your brother has to go go through this. My father is going through the same thing and we're hoping he gets through the summer comfortably. Palliative chemo has been a big help in making him feel more comfortable. If that is an option for your brother I recommend it if he is in good enough shape to take it. There are a few side effects but the benefits have far outweighed the negatives in our case.

All you can do is to be there for him and be supportive. I know my dad just doesn't want to be alone. I hope your brother starts to feel better soon!!! Please take care of yourself. It's easy to become overwhelmed. Make sure you talk to some one or seek supportive councelling. Councelling helped me after the loss of my uncle from the same type of cancer. It's hit my family twice. I'm happy for the good moments this time around. I'm doing my best to make the best of a bad situation. I hope you can do the same!! I wish your family the best.
