I am new to this forum and have found it interesting and some helpful comments. I am grateful for all of you. I am 51years old and I have been in treatment for cancer of unknown primary for the last year. Initially it was detected when I was suffering from upper back pain on MRI found in the C7 and T 2 vertebra and had biopsy in Aug 2004, radiation for 10 treatments, there were also noted a small spot in the pancrease the showed hypermetabolic activity and miliary lesions in the lungs bilaterally too numerous to count (did not light up on PET). I had 3 cycles of cisplatin plus gemzar (Sept - Jan), then 3 cycles of taxotere and gemzar (Jan to April) and the last 3 cycles have been with xeloda (April to June). The cancer seems to be relatively stable w/ very little grown after the initial cisplatin and gemzar I had some new spots in the iliac bone and L1 vertebra but no other new spots.

The current problem is radiation necrosis on the spinal cord at the C7-T2 region (area of radiation in Aug). Noted edema around the cord area and started Decadron tapering dose 16mg daily for 10 days, 8mg daily for 1 wk then 4mg daily for 1 wk, then 2 mg etc., trental and vit E. The I have had MRI - one a month ago and one just this last Monday which showed relative stability( slight improvement, lumbar puncture which showed no cancer cells. The lesion is causing significant difficulty with my walking and sensation in the lower extremities. The right leg is still strong and have sensation but no control over the left leg- I can still drive and am walking with a cane and a prosthetic device on the left ankle. This week I have seen neuro-onc at MD Anderson and we decided to change the treatment a little blood thinners (coumadin and pletal)and add hyperbaric treatment. Does anyone out there have any exerience with this problem. I have read about radiation necrosis in the brain but have not been able to find very much concerning the spinal cord. Confused
