Can anyone tell me when the side effects of radiation start to level off and subside? My mother is currently getting radiation, and she has had 23 days so far (so about 4 weeks to date) for radiation to the head and neck. She has a tremendous amount of mucous buildup due to the radiation that she has no choice to expel many times a day. We are all wondering when the side effects are going to level off. She went through about 2 weeks straight (then had to take 3 weeks off because she was having such a tough time and was dehydrated, and just started radiation again last Monday. I would appreciate any comments or advice!

I havent had mucous buildup when I had radiation but I did so when I completed the high dose chemo, aka bone marrow transpant. While at home it felt like I had a mouth full of water every 5 seconds and I would constantly spit almost every minute. After 3 weeks or so the mucous would go down, and it should take a month for the mucous to be totally gone. Hope this helps.
