I'm newly diagnosed with Dcis. Here is the Stereotactic biopsy pathologhy report: Specimen contains a focus of ductal carcinoma in situ, nuclear grade I of III (well differentiated), growing in a micropapillary to cribriform configuration. Microcalcifications are present within the lesion but no necrosis is observed. No stromal invasion is found. No invasive malignancy identified. . My question is since there's no mass or lump (the microcalcs were found on my first ever screening mammogram), what determines how much of a "lump" has to be removed?? Why do some women with DCIS know the size of their calcifications and then treatment is based on that? I don't read anywhere on the pathology report how big the calcs were, just that they were microcalcs.

Hello

The biopsy only confirms the diagnosis. Then you will probably go back for more surgery, and tissue will be removed until clear margins are found.
