My mother was recently diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer with mets throughout the abdomen. She is going to have a port placed today and is slated to begin chemo tomorrow with Taxotere and carboplatin. Has anyone been on this regiment before? Could you inform me about the side effects and effectiveness? She is to received a dose every 3 weeks for 6 weeks. I understand that she will lose all body hair and may have some neuropathies as a result of this chemo. Please let me know if you have tolerated this regime and how you are doing now. Thank you. hi mauntie,
Im sorry for your mother who is going through chemotherapy.. yes all chemos have side effects.. one has to endure them with patience. but with time all of them get reversed. So all the best for her treatment..
recently too, my aunt had been administered the same drug for her chemos so possibly i could help you with some information on carboplatein.
Carboplatin is chemotherapy that is given as a treatment for some types of cancer. It is most commonly used for ovarian and lung cancer, but may be used in the treatment of many other types.

side effects of carboplatein.:Each person?s reaction to chemotherapy is unique. Some people have very few side effects, while others may experience more. The side effects described in this information will not affect everyone who is given carboplatin, and may be different if you are having more than one chemotherapy drug.

Lowered resistance to infection Carboplatin can reduce the production of white blood cells by the bone marrow, making you more prone to infection.
Bruising or bleeding Carboplatin can reduce the production of platelets (which help the blood to clot).

Anaemia (low number of red blood cells) While having treatment with carboplatin you may become anaemic. This may make you feel tired and breathless.

Nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting There are now very effective anti-sickness drugs to prevent or greatly reduce nausea and vomiting.
Loss of appetite A dietitian or specialist nurse at your hospital can give advice and tips on boosting appetite, coping with eating difficulties and maintaining weight.

Tiredness and a general feeling of weakness It is important to allow yourself plenty of time to rest.

less common side effects:Numbness or tingling in hands or feet ,Changes in hearing ,Diarrhoea ,Sore mouth and taste change .
You may notice that your food tastes different. Normal taste will come back after the treatment finishes.

Your kidneys may be temporarily affected This is unlikely to cause any symptoms.

Hair loss :Hair loss is extremely rare if you have normal doses of carboplatin, but may happen to some patients who have high-dose treatment. If you do lose your hair, it usually begins about 3?4 weeks after starting treatment, although it may occur earlier. It is temporary, and the hair will start to regrow once the treatment ends.
Fertility: Your ability to become pregnant or father a child may be affected by taking this drug.
Contraception :It is not advisable to become pregnant or father a child while taking carboplatin, as the developing foetus may be harmed.
