In August I noticed painless enlarged lymph nodes in my left armpit. At this time there were no changes in my breast. I was referred to a surgeon by my PC physician. He did a CT scan of my trunk, which showed diffuse lymphadenopathy on the left side: armpit, abdomen, and groin. The nodes in my armpit were biopsied, and the report was that they were non-maligant. About 3 weeks after the biopsy, I noticed a discoloration and swelling in my left breast. Initially, I told myself that it was probably caused by the biopsy. Two weeks later, when I began to feel a burning inside the breast, and the pink discoloration had spread, I called my surgeon. He ordered a mammogram, which showed no change from the one I had in Nov 03. I saw the surgeon the next day, after examining my breast and biopsy site, he saw no connection. He gave no indication that it looked like mastitis. He did say we must rule out inflammatory breast cancer, although he really didn't see that. He prescribed Keflex 2000mg daily for seven days, and said to come back in two weeks. I have been on the antibiotics for 5 days, and there is no improvement in my breast. Actually it seems a little worse.
I am concerned about having to wait another week to see the surgeon. If he decides to biopsy, it may be another week. What I have read about IBC sure sounds like it could be a possiblity, especially since the antibiotics do not seem to be working. Has anyone had an experience like this? Please share your thoughts. I've never had IBC, but from what I've heard from ladies who have, the tissue is red. That's really about all I know about it except they do treat it with chemo and the sooner the better. Don't wait another week. There is no reason for you onco to get upset if you are feeling uneasy about this. Call tomorrow and get an appt. to be seen. If it's not IBC, then your mind is at peace, if it is, let the tretments begin.
Best of luck to you
Nancy
