My Dad, age 65, was admitted to ER on Jan. 2 with severe shortness of breath. By January 9, we had a diagnosis of advanced congestive heart failure and extensive small cell lung cancer with mets to the brain and possibly kidney.
Dad has had 10 cranial radiation treatments to the brain and is currently in his 3rd session of chemo (etoposide/carboplatin combo). We are dealing with the side effects of chemo and radiation fairly well, and actually Dad feels pretty good for what he has been through so far.
I realize non-small cell is more common and that is why there are many more posts on that type of cancer and more people have experienced that type, but is there anyone who can help me with a time frame and what to expect for small cell receiving treatment?
Almost every post I've seen on any forum that deals with small cell, the patient didn't receive treatment and their time from diagnosis until the end was very short. I would just like to see if I can find someone who has experience extensive small cell lung cancer with radiation/chemo and what to expect.
I can deal with whatever anyone has to say. I held my step-dad's hand last year while he died of a supposedly one in a million disease of Creutzfeld Jacob Disease, which is equivalent to what cows experience with "mad cow disease". If I can deal with that, I can deal with anything!
Any help would be very much appreciated! |

| Hello Deba. I am sorry to hear about your Dad. My Dad was diagnosed with extensive small cell in The beginning of March 2005. He had disease in his liver and lower back at that time. He had two treatments of chemo, one consisted of 4 rounds 3 weeks apart which he dealt with and one that was only one treatment that almost killed him. He stopped the treatment at that time which I think was the end of november 2005. He passed away 2 days ago on Feb 27th. I am still a bit shakey from the whole experience so I am not going to go into great detail about the end here but if I can be of any help in the near future please let me know. You can email me at marcosis@comcast.net if you like. God bless both of you! |
