This is my first post here. I am looking for some advice as to what type of doctor is need to see. I have a history of endometrial cancer with total hysterectomy almost a year ago. I also completed 25 radiation treatments in April 04. No chemo. I had a CT scan in June 04 which showed a small nodule in my right middle lung. They sent me for a PET scan which came back with a benign result. I was told it was probably scar tissue and nothing to worry about. Everything was fine until my gyn/onc sent me for a routine follow-up CT of the pelvis, abdomen, and chest which revealed the mass in my right middle lobe had trippled in size in about 3 months. That was about a month ago. Since then, I was referred to a pulmonologist who did a broncoscopic biopsy which only showed inflammation, a needle biopsy which did not reveal evidence of malignancy. They sent the needle biopsy out to Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, but they were not able to rule out malignancy either because there was not enough of a sample to make a diagnosis. I was back at the pulmonologist again today who did a chest x-ray. Apparently the mass is not getting any smaller, and he wants to send me to a thoracic surgeon to remove the mass. The pulmonary doctor actually wanted me to have this major surgery in 2 days. I thought this was strange since he doesn't know what it is. I'm wondering if I should see a general oncologist first to see what their recommendation is. I have an appointmnet with the thoracic surgeon this week to discuss the surgery.
I feel like this pulmonologist has no experience in dealing with cancer. I don't know what to do. Please help.

Hello

As it sounds like they have tried to get biopsies and could not elucidate the diagnosis, usually the next step is an open biopsy through a toracoscopy. I think a pulmonologist would be exactly the specialist you would like to talk to, because they work up lung nodules and masses, and talk to surgeons to arrange for surgeries. You can ask him to talk to your oncologist, but I think a pulmonologist would be the specialist I'd like to see if I had the same problem.

regards,
Leo

Hi leo,
Thanks for the reply. I am seeing a thoracic surgeon today whom I was referred to by the pulmonologist. I'm pretty much getting the same advice from everyone I ask....have the lung surgery to remove the mass. If you don't mind me asking... did you have lung surgery? How are you doing now? I'd like to hear more about your situation.

Thanks again!
