Hi,
my name is steven im 16 this year and i lost my grandfather to cancer of the pancreas in august three years ago. My grandmother had cancer in her lungs from what i can remember when i was 9. She survived, however she had been diagnosed with cancer in her stomach three weeks ago. I really don't know what to do, ive already lost my grandfather and i couldnt bare to see my nan go. Is there any advice some older people could give me to cope please. Ive been readin up on it, and it says after surgery there is a 30% chance of cure this worries me a fair bit. So please any help at all i would greatfully appreciate.
Thank you in advanced,
Steve

Steve, this message, unlike the previous one, I much more specific. You want information about stomach cancer and I have none to offer. I am so sorry you are facing your grandmother’s cancer! Have you told this to your parents or even to your grandmother? I think that would be very helpful and a loving way to reach out to your grandmother.

Since I have no specific information to give you, I am moving this thread to the stomach cancer forum below.

My prayers and thoughts are with you and your grandmother.

Dear Steven,
your letter shows that you are a very fine person. Your Nan is so lucky to have you there.

I know a gentleman who is over 80 and for the past 30 years he has had many cancers and has dealt with them all. My own husband was diagnosed with a very bad stomach cancer 20 months ago, was given just a few months to live, had chemotherapy, and is now back at work. He is 66 this year. How old is your Nan?

You mention surgery. Is your Nan definitely going to have surgery? Do you know what kind of cancer your Nan has? I have heard that some are worse than others.

I myself coped by doing these things:

I asked all our families and friends to please send healing thoughts and prayers.
I accepted what was happening. It was difficult and I went around muttering under my breath “I accept, I accept, I accept”.
I spent as much time as possible with my husband remembering all the good and fun times.
I cuddled up to him; I played his favourite music.
I learned Reiki, a hands-on healing treatment, and we both found it very comforting and relaxing. I feel that you can be a good Reiki practitioner. Google “reiki” and see what you think.
I trusted the doctors and nurses and if I wanted to know something about anything I asked them. I was given the results of every test.
I made my husband exercise as much as possible but within the limits advised by the doctors.
I made him eat as much as possible but, again, what the doctors advised. If your Nan has surgery then the doctors will tell her how to handle her diet after surgery and in the years to come.
I took time for myself. It is very important for the carer not to get run down. We need to relax with a book, TV, or a friend.

Tell your Nan how much you love her. I am sure she knows this already but it is nice to hear it!

Please let us know what your family circumstances are. Are you the carer for your Nan? The forum members need to know so that they can advise you on where to go for help if you need help. What country are you in?

Speak with your Nan about what is happening to her. Tell her that you have been reading about stomach cancer. Ask her if there is anything she wants to know. I will help you as much as I can, and am sure the other forum members will too.

May God keep you and your Nan close to Him. You will both be in my prayers every night.

Love and hugs.
