I moved my sister Linda out of the nursing home and into the Stein Hospice Center yesterday. Stein Hospice feels her time is near. I am having a hard time accepting this. Linda was lifeflighted to the Cleveland Clinic (they were excellent) and had immediate surgery last December after a very large tumor was found. The doctor was not able to remove the entire tumor and another tumor was found that could not be removed. she has a rare type of brain cancer. Linda's prognosis was 4-8 weeks without treatment, 6-12 months with chemo and radiation. My sister decided she did not want any medical treatment. She has outlived her prognosis and improved for awhile. About a month ago, I started to notice deterioration. The last week she has has declined significantly. I don't feel strong enough to handle this. I am teary eyed all the time and cry to much. I want to be be her side 24/7 and I have not been able to do that. I am so afraid she may dye and no one will be there. I am going to take a leave from work beginning next Wednesday (my sister flew in today and is leaving Wednesday). I am so sad.

Patti, I am so sorry to hear about Linda's cancer and current condition. My mother died of a GBMIV only 2 months after her diagnosis. She opted for no treatments due to how large it was when it was found. What kind of cancer does Linda have? I assume from how aggressive it is that it too is a GBM grade IV.

Patti, you and Linda are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm not sure I am spelling this correctly but it was a combination of two brain cancers and was called glial nueronal. When Linda was orginally diagnosed I tried to find information about it on the internet but was never able to. The surgeon stated it was very rare, only a few known cases in the United States, and it would probably end up in the medical journals. My father died of lung cancer and now my sister with brain cancer. I hope I never have to go through this again. Cancer is a terrible disease.

Patti, what Linda probably has is a Gangliogliomas which is a cancer for affects the glial cells and the neuronal cell for the brain an central nervous system. These are rare indeed amounting only to 1% of all brain cancers. However, Gangliogliomas usually occur in people under 20 so that makes Linda's case truly unusual. The prognosis is usually very good (unlike a GBM) if the tumor is removed. I am sorry to hear that your sister does not qualify for surgery.

An easy read about Gangliogliomas can be found at this link http://tinyurl.com/56vefb .

Hi Patti, I'm so sorry for what you and your sister are going through. You are going through grief and everyone handles this differently. You really need some support. I'm not sure if you have family or friends that can give you that but a councillor or someone will be able to help. It is hard to know what to say to someone who is going through this, but please know that we are here for you to talk to and relieve some of your burden. The people on here, some who are going through what your sister is going through, others who are or have been in the same situation as you. My thoughts, prayers and love are with you both.

Dear Patti

I too am very sorry to hear about your Sister's decline & current condition. I will hold you both up in my prayers.

As Jen stated you need to lean on others for support at this time. Don't carry or bottle up all this emotion, you need an outlet too. Perhaps the hospice center where your Sis is can recommend someone there for you to talk to? Have you other family members that you can lean on? Family support can be invaluable whilst you are grieving. I do hope you can take leave from your work to spend quality time with your Sis.

Keep us updated if you can? We are a strong, supportive community & don't hesitate to post here with any of your concerns or questions. Even just to come here & offload will be beneficial.

Thinking of you,
Angie.

My sister Linda passed away yesterday. Linda's deterioration was so fast. Although I will miss her, she is no longer bed ridden in a nursing home. I have received alot of support from my sister since she has been in town. The funeral is Thursday and she is flying home after the funeral. I also have my husband. I am worried about mom. She is 88 and lives alone. This has been hard on her. Thank you everyone for your replies. It makes me feel better.

Oh Patti, I am so very sorry about Linda's death. My heart is breaking for you as it does for all who have to go through this. But I feel a special kindred with people dealing with brain cancers (for obvious reasons). This is such a terrible disease. Linda died so fast! From all that I read, her prognosis was a good one. But those figures were based on a large number of children and not on adults.

My prayer are with you as you go through this sad time.
