My dad was sent to CAT Scan due to his leg swelling. He got oral solution to drink (Barium Sulfate suspension), but apparently there will be no dye injected (at least they did not ask him to have a blood test which is a routine before dye injection). My question is - is it normal to have a CAT Scan that looks for enlarged lymph nodes and metestases without dye injection ? What was your experience ?

I had to drink the barium solution (Readi-Cat or something like that) each time and I THINK I had the dye injection each time, but maybe not. I know I had it a time or two.

I don't remember any blood tests in preparation for the injection.

I recently had a colonoscopy with the Barium Sulfate suspension but without an injection of any die. Over the years I have had many CT Scans and MRI Scans... some with and some without contrast agents. It is my understanding that if all they are trying to do is tell whether or not the cancer has metastasize, often no die is needed. However, if they are trying to get the best image possible in order to plan for surgery or radiation, or if the are trying to see very clearly if there is any blood supply issues or nerve involvement issues, then dies are used. At least that is what I have been told.
