Hi all. I am new to this forum - very sad that I had to find and join it, but glad that this kind of support exists.

My father was just diagnosed with rectal cancer. The doctor says that he has had it for quite a long time, and is worried it may have spread to other parts of the body. In fact, they say that there is most likely a fairly large tumor in the brain as well, since he has been having bad headaches and vision loss.

This has happened SO suddenly, and is so unexpected that I don't know what to do. Plus he has been losing weight. Right now, they are keeping him in the hospital to do additional MRI, CAT scans, etc.

Can anyone please provide advice on the BEST oncologist in the NJ/NY area? And also, the best hospital? Sloan-Kettering has been mentioned, but they won't take his insurance. How is Columbia Presbyterian? Or Robert Wood Johnson? I've heard good things about those? How is Trinitas? Or Hackensack?

I want to get his treatment started right away, but I want to do it in the best way possible. Please help. My family and I are so worried and scared.

Thank you. Sad

njson, I am very sorry about your father's cancer. I know what it was like for me when my parents had cancer.

I do not know anything about the oncologists in NJ/NY area. However, there are a number of excellent hospitals in that area. Here is a link to a list of the top cancer centers in the US: http://www.usnews.com/directories/hospitals/index_html/specialty+IHQCANC/

I will be thinking about and praying for your father. Keep us up to date on his condition.
