Hello everyone I am new to this and have a concerning question...my 13 year old son came to me this morning to show me a hard lump behind his right ear it is oval in shape and very noticeable by looking at it with the naked eye. I asked him if it hurt to touch or press on it and he said no. I also asked him when he first noticed it and how big was it at the time. He informs me that he thinks it has been there for about 4-5 months and started out very small like the size of a pea and is now about the size of a medium shaped oval egg and it is hard and does not move around. Like I said it is not sore at all. I asked him why he waited this long to show me this as my father when he was 21 had been diagnoised with NHL and at that time they did not have the advancement and cure rate for NHL as they do now. I am 41 and it scares me that my son has this and it is growing. I have made a doctors appointment for him which is scheduled for next Tuesday in the AM for his family doctor to see him. I would like to hear from someone out there as I am worried it may be something other then just an infection as he does not show any signs of a sore throat or ears hurting. Although I have noticed he is quite pale lately and has been waking up with his sheets soaked and he usually sleeps without blankets and in his boxers. He complains alot of abdominal pains in the center of his stomach and he did have his appendix out this past spring so that I know is not his apendix. He also has been quite tired and he is a very active 13 year old boy. I am worried...I hope to hear from someone out there who can talk to me on this. Thank you

Concerned and worried mom

Hello all just wanted to let you know I had taken my son to the doctors the other day and he was given a referral to go see a plastic surgeron regarding the lump and while speaking with the receptionist at the Specialists office she is getting my son in to see the Doctor right away as she feels that considering his age only being 13 and the rapid growth of this lump that is needs to be seen to right away. There is such a long waiting period to get in to see a specialist and his waiting list was going into the new year and well into February. So I am glad my son has his appointment scheduled for September 27 so that is just in a few weeks thank goodness. My son now is complaining of have bad headaches and he is a very active teenager and to see him down with a headache which he never gets is worrisome. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be apprediated greatly. If not I will certainly keep people posted regarding his appointment with the Plastic surgeon. Crossing fingers on this.

Thank you I will certainly keep updates on this. As well we just found out the other day with my 13 year old that he was diagnosed with Pectus Excavatum which is better known as sunken chest or Funnel Chest. He was born with a indent in his chest however the Dr kept an eye on it but now where he is in his teens we figured he would have grown into his body the the chest would have filled out but if anything it has gotten deeper. To make matters worse he had chest x-rays done this past Tuesday and the Dr who reads the x-rays after the technician has taken them contacted my family dr and informed her that my sons heart is pushed over more then it should from this indent and that he will require surgery in the near furtuer so there is another thing for me to worry and stress about..It just seems like one thing after another...but I will keep you all posted on the lump. Thank you again

Beth

Any lump ,anywhere on the body, nomatter at what age should allways be taken deadly serious.
When i was 17 i had lumps nearly as big as golf balls under my arms in my groin and neck and allso in my elbows but for some weird reason didnt feel or notice them, it wasnt untill i began vomiting uncontrolably and my mum noticed my whole stomach was as hard as rock that i was raced to the family vet.
Diognosis was acute, final stage N.H.L. but im still here at 44, i often wonder why that is.
