My mother has primary ovarian cancer with liver met. One month ago hospice said she had 2 months to live, then 2 weeks, then a week, now 3 - 21 days.
She opted for no treatment but hospice has been coming in twice a week.
She is currently on around 120 mg of Methadone a day and her confusion is accelerating rapidly. She forgets what she was saying and a lot of times just can't find the words to say what she wants. She also falls asleep in the middle of conversations and while eating.
The tumor (s) are pressing on nerves and that is causing great pain down her leg. She cannot walk without assistance and she was catheterized last week.
She also has severe pain in her right shoulder and hospice has not really addressed it other than to say maybe it has spread to her lungs. I got aggressive with them yesterday and now they think she may have something wrong with her rotator cuff. They are going to try and get a doctor out here tomorrow.
Last night she tried to get up on her own and fell. She said she didn't know what she doing and forgot she wasn't supposed to get up. I slept with her the rest of the night. Since we were unable to get some bed rails today because it is Sunday I am sleeping with her again.
I am scared because she is violently jerking and moaning. Her eyes are partially open and her eyes are zipping back and forth. When I try and wake her she looks pained and will not wake easily.
Has anyone else experienced any of these things? _________________ Dana |

Dear Dana,
My sister did all of those things before she passed away. You must watch her closely because she will forget and do things over and over. My sister kept putting hand sanitizer in her mouth.
Has your mother been running a fever? That is also an indicator that our loved one is about to pass on. I wish I had been told that before it happened. I did not know what to look for.
Please write me at waldrep.megan@gmail.com so I can talk to you more.
I am here for you and we all are.
Please take care.
All my Love,

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation as it must be difficult to watch your mom in this situation. What you describe is could be combination of narcotic effect and being close to death. Talk with your hospice team and continue working with them. Best wishes _________________ RLee, MD
