Hi! All ,
As you are aware I am new on this site and am at this point a little lost in this type of Cancer. May 2007 I was diagnosed with Squarmcell Carcenoma of the Neck and Throat, I had a Modified Radical Neck Dissection followed by Chemo and Radiotherapy things went swimmingly until June 2008 I was having problems eating and getting bad reflux, so back to the hospital where they performed surgery on my Duodeenum(Bipas), my Bile Duct(Bipass) and removed my Gall bladder. I start chemo and R/T in September BUT they are unable to remove the Cancer in my Pancreas as it is too far imbedded in the sact.
I would like any info on this bastard and any thing I should be aware off.
Look forward to any replies,Thanks
Trev

Hi Trev,

So sorry to hear about your news. Maybe a post in the neck and throat and also the pancreatic thread will get you some advice and support.

Thinking of you. IN

Trev, I am very sorry about your cancer. I am also a little confused as to the type of cancer you have. It is rather rare for a person to have two primary cancers at the same time. Having said that, it is not impossible.

In any case, I will move your post to the pancreatic cancer forum since that is probably the most serious one.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the worse cancers that a person can have because of its often devastating impact on the person's quality of life. It is also extremely aggressive and therefore should be treated aggressively. You might want to read the website of one of our former members who died last fall. His story was an inspiration to a lot of us even if we did not have Pancreatic Cancer.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

HI there
My name is Deborah and I am Trevor's wife. He wants me to clarify his information for you because he's a pretty slow typer!
In May last year (2007) Trevor was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Occult Primary. As he said he had a removal of right tonsil (searching for the primary) followed by modified radical neck dissection. Two more affected nodes were found but still no sign of the primary cancer.
Since then he had chemo and r/t which finished in Sept 2008. Apart from the issues associated with r/t he recovered extremely well. He had a dilation of his throat at the beginning of the year because of pooling and swallowing problems. He has gone from strength to strength and amazed everyone who thought he was looking better than ever. We all thought that and he certainly felt better than ever as well.
He began to have some reflux on 7th July, hiccups and then throwing up. This continued and he saw our GP for a check on the 11th. He was advised to go to the local hospital if things continued or got worse over the weekend and he was actually admitted on the 13th on IV fluids. That was a Sunday and on the Monday night he was sure he'd be home on Tues, he was feeling so much better. Monday night though he was sick again and CT scans on Tues indicated an obstructed duodenum.
He was transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital (where he had all of his treament last year) on 16th. A biopsy on the 17th was inconclusive so another was done on the 19th. This was still inconclusive as to the type of cancer however it showed that the blockage was greater than it had been just a few days earlier. On the 25th he had a duodenal bypass, removal of gall bladder and relocation of bile duct. Positive nodes were found in the abdomen and the cancer was identified as adenocarcinoma originating from the pancreas. The surgeon had reserved the right to do whatever he felt necessary once he was in theatre and he was going to remove the neck of the pancreas if he necessary.
Turns out that wasn't done because the pancreas is too embedded. R/T and chemo planned now for treatment. Tomorrow is the planning meeting for the r/t and chemo appt is set for 13th Sept (one year to the day since he finished his treatment last year!).
This cancer is not related to last year's in any way. I guess he is just really lucky. Not!
It seems that Trevor is a champion recoverer and was doing exceptionallly well post surgery until he picked up and infection (pseudomonas) and has been sidelined as a result of that. Currently he is having IV antibiotics (Tazocin) and that is what's keeping him in hospital. He is struggling with his confinement and we both want OUT and for him to be home. Wish us well with that.
So there you have it. There aren't two primaries, just the one as last year's is still missing and hopefully out of action.
We are in the dark a bit with this episode and haven't really been able to find too much information, just that's it's not what you want to have. We want to know what is in store, or at least just what kind of things we need to be doing and expecting. Any assistance/guidance with this would be very much appreciated.
Cheers
Deborah for Trevor

Deborah, sometimes I hate this job; this is one of those times. I hate that I was right in my original assumption that what Trevor has is metastatic Pancreatic Cancer Sad.

I hope you take the time to read Marty's website (link is in my previous reply). Although Marty died, he fought and fought hard and had a productive life until the very end. Trevor can too. It will take every once of strength, courage, faith, love, and support he has; the fight is not an easy one. But Trevor can still live a productive and happy life, how ever long that life may be.

Hi Trev & Deborah,
I just wanted you to know that there are people out there who do well, even with PC, despite the stats that you may come across. My husband was diagnosed a year ago last week with stage IV PC on his 45th birthday. We are now a year down the road and he is doing so much better. Yes the treatments can be a drag and he does suffer from some fatigue and nausea from time to time but overall he feels pretty good and we live a very normal life. We have two small kids who keep us focused. The most important thing to do with PC, even in Australia, is to seek out the most advanced cancer center you can get to and try and find doctors who have experience with PC. They are the docs that will know about current treatments that are not in the current medical literature yet. Our onc says that we are treating this like a chronic condition--not curable, but treatable. Stay strong and keep hope alive. There ARE survivors out there. Also, there is an organization here in the US (California) called the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. They can supply tons of useful info and I imagine they can help you even if you are overseas--www.pancan.org. Good luck!

Amy
