Hi,

Just wanted to give an update regarding my dad's condition, and I realize I may need your support more than ever. He went to the doctor last Wednesday June 18th, and then again to a spcialist at MacMaster
University Hospital in Hamilton Ontario. The news is not so good. The conclusion of MRI reads:

"Findings in keeping with known cirrhosis including splenomegaly and ascites. There is a complex area of architectual\perfusion abnormality intermixed with coalescent subcapsular and intraparpenhymal
nodules of various size and shape present within the right liver lobe laterally, mainly involving the postterior hepatic segment as discribed. Some degree of capsular retraction is present suggestive
of an element of regional fibrosis. Some of the nodules present are likely dysplastic in nature but the signal characteristics of a few of the intermediate size nodules are more worrisome for the
presence of multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma."

So in laymens turns, he has several nodules on liver which appear to be cancer. The specialist today prescribed lactulose, more as a preventive I think, and a stronger does of diruretics. She told him that basically his only hope is to have a liver transplant. But I really do not know how likely that will be due to the three strikes againest him, Hep C, Cirrhosis, and cancer. She is sending a letter to the transplant centre in Toronto On, and we will hear in about two weeks if they will accept him as a canidate. On Thursday she is going perform a Endoscopy to see how bad the pressure is on his blood vessels because he also has portal hypertention. So in a nutshell it has not been a very good day. I am having trouble keeping my spirits up that there is still hope. If anyone knows of someone
who has been approved for a transplant in my condition, please let me know. He has three children who have offered to be live donors if they are a match, but that also scares him.

Just wanted to let you all know what is happening; and I will try to stay in touch. Thank you all so much for your support.

scareddaughter2, I was just checking each of our forums and saw that no one has replied to you. How is your father doing now? I know you said that you are having problems keeping your spirits up. How are YOU doing?

You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

I wish there was really magic to make all this go away or maybe a jennie in a bottle. We will support you in any way we can. A couple of good sites to visit are The mayo Clinic type the L then go to liver cancer. Another is medhelp.org there you can archive (search) liver cancer and see stories there also. And of course The American Cancer Society site. Knowing your options, 2nd opinions and reading will bring you knowledge about this terrible, mostly untreatable desease. I wish your dad well. Please keep us informed as reading others stories supports and helps us also.
